Consulting

For many years, Arazzeria Scassa has provided consultancy services to those interested in one of the many aspects related to the world of tapestries and carpets.

Arazzeria Scassa’s extensive experience – unique in many ways – offers up the possibility to engage with an interlocutor who has been operating in the field non-stop for over seventy years. Now in its second generation in the tapestry business, Massimo Bilotta deals directly with the people who submit various questions, from requests for valuations to an analysis of possible new creative projects.

Artists, galleries, cultural spaces and private or public collections can thus improve their presence in the world and on the art market whilst developing their activities, including in addition to liaising with one of the oldest Art Houses currently operating  in Italy.

Maintenance

Arazzeria Scassa plays a vital role in the conservation of tapestries around the world, dealing not only with its own works but generally taking care of tapestries and carpets from different eras and hailing from the most disparate of manufactures.

The various cleaning techniques are applied directly at the Certosa di Asti headquarters, following natural and specific methods, in full respect of the fibres and colours, drawing on extensive experience. Thus, the various phases are implemented to restore brightness and colour to fabric material. Tapestries and carpets subject to this type of inspection can be periodically monitored, so as to ensure a stable state of conservation, before returning with peace of mind the work to the family or collective heritage.

Valutation

An important aspect is the analysis and valuation of the tapestries and carpets that private individuals and entities possess and of which the true value may not be known. To this end, Arazzeria Scassa conducts assessments of works with specific analyses to understand as much as possible regarding the exact origin of the work, the age of the creation and the techniques underlying the production.

These skills ensure our work is as professional and complete as possible, along with providing clarifications on the various aspects requested. A valuation in terms of the economic worth of a work combines several aspects, all of which are essential and must be studied, scrutinised and interpreted by professionals in the sector so as to confirm the true value, to prevent selling or buying at the wrong price. Together with Massimo Bilotta – Director of Arazzeria Scassa and nephew of Ugo Scassa – defining all that goes into a quote will better facilitate the determination of any asking price for the possible purchase or sale of a work.

Authenticity

From an entirely artistic point of view, the term “authenticity” refers to the attribution of a work to a particular author. Thanks to the meticulous collection of information stored in the Archives of the Arazzeria Scassa, it is possible to trace the various manufactures and the works created on Asti looms throughout the decades.

The Arazzeria is available to authenticate works and in the event of a successful outcome, to issue certificates attesting to the piece being produced by Scassa. Authenticity is certainly one of the most important aspects of a work of art, significantly affecting its evaluation, both from an artistic and economic point of view. Authentication also leads to the discretionary inclusion of the work in the Arazzeria Scassa database.

Restauration

As a matter of extreme importance, the restoration of an artwork must be conducted in a timely and proper manner, not only from a historical point of view but also from a legal perspective, in compliance with the requirements on the fine arts, which must be carefully safeguarded over time.

It is certainly also in the interest of the collector to ensure that an artwork is looked after! The tapestry atelier has carefully restored tapestries and carpets practically since its debut. The restoration technique used by Arazzeria Scassa ensures the conservation of the work and is completed directly in the Asti atelier.

Amongst the works of art restored by Arazzeria Scassa is the tapestry made based on the cartoon by Agnolo Bronzino, dated 1549 and produced by the team of Cosimo I, a work that is currently part of the collections of the Quirinale in Rome.
